Privacy Statement

The City of Dieppe takes the protection of personal information collected through its website, or on its behalf, very seriously. This privacy statement describes how data generated by the use of the City’s website is collected, used, communicated, stored and protected.

Technical information

Depending on the technical configuration of the website and the services incorporated into it, some information may be collected automatically during your visit, including through the use of cookies or similar technologies and by recording the IP address associated with your device or Internet connection. This may include the type of browser used, the operating system, the date and time of the visit, the pages viewed, the duration of the visit, and the referring site.

Depending on the context, some of this technical information, including IP addresses and certain unique identifiers associated with a session, a cookie or a device, may constitute personal or identifying information when recorded and can be used to identify an individual on its own or combined with other information.

The City uses this information to ensure the proper functioning, security, maintenance and improvement of the website, to prevent security incidents or misuse, and to generate usage statistics. If the information is personal, the City collects and uses it only as permitted by law, including when it is directly related to and necessary for a City service, program or activity, or when authorized or required by law.

The City generally does not attempt to identify you based on this technical information. However, it may use, verify or correlate some information when necessary to protect the integrity of the website, investigate a security incident, prevent misuse, comply with a legal obligation or exercise a legal authority. The Right to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RTIPPA) applies where personal information is involved in such correlation, cross-referencing or matching.

As the City’s website is hosted by a third-party provider, some information may be collected, processed or stored on its behalf by that provider or authorized subcontractors. The City requires service providers acting on its behalf to implement appropriate administrative, technical and physical safeguards to protect this information from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, loss or destruction. It also requires that the information be used only for legitimate purposes related to hosting, operating, securing and improving the website, stored only as long as necessary, and securely disposed of in accordance with applicable requirements.

In most cases, you can configure your browser to block certain cookies or to receive a notification when a cookie is placed on your device. However, declining certain cookies may affect the proper functioning of parts of the website.

Personal information

Through its website, the City may collect personal information that you voluntarily provide when you fill out a form, submit a request, register for a service or contact the City. As noted in the previous section, some technical information may also constitute personal or identifying information, depending on the context.

The City protects personal information in its custody or under its control in accordance with the RTIPPA and implements reasonable security measures and information management practices to protect it from unauthorized access, use, disclosure or disposal.

When collecting personal information directly, the City informs the individual, at the point of collection or through a related notice, of the purposes of collection, the legal authority for the collection, and the title, office address and telephone number of a person who can answer questions, subject to exceptions provided by law.

How might my personal information be used or shared?

The City does not sell or rent your personal information to other organizations. Personal information is used only for the purposes for which it was collected, for purposes consistent with the original purpose, with your consent, or as permitted or required by law. Any use or communication is limited to the minimum amount of information necessary. Access is restricted to employees, agents or authorized service providers who require the information to perform their duties.

The City may disclose personal information without consent when permitted or required by law, including in certain situations described in the RTIPPA or when ordered by a court.

How can I access my personal information held by the City?

You may submit a written request to review or receive a copy of the personal information the City holds about you, subject to exceptions provided by law. You may also request in writing that inaccurate or incomplete personal information be corrected.
